HANDMADE PAPER WEDDING INVITATIONS
Handmade paper wedding invitations are a wonderful idea for any wedding. The thing I love about handmade paper is that no piece is the same which leads to an individual and unique characteristic for every piece of stationery.
At Babooche Calligraphy we mainly use handmade paper wedding invitations that is made from cotton, also know as rag paper.
HOW IS HANDMADE PAPER MADE?
Cotton linters or cotton from cloth rags are used as the main material to make cotton handmade paper. This type of paper is really good quality as it it strong and durable and anything that is printed on it will last a long time, which is idea for your wedding invitations.
The process of making paper involves tearing, chopping, beating, pressing, drying and cutting. The raw material of cotton from rags and cotton linters is often bleached first to remove colour and make the cloth white. Then the bleached cloth is torn and chopped finely into tiny pieces. Waste paper is added to the cloth pieces which are then mixed together with water in a beater. It’s important to have a beater machine as it will beat the mixture finely to make a pulp. The pulp is then poured onto a mould which is made up of two frames. There is a screen on the mould which will hold the pulp and allow the water to drain out. The wet pulp that is left on the mould is then placed on a cloth and then pressed to make a sheet of paper.
WHY CHOOSE HANDMADE PAPER WEDDING INVITATIONS?
Handmade paper can be printed, foiled and letterpress printed and therefore is a beautiful surface to create wedding invitation designs. There is a wonderful texture that is created through the process of pressing which gives a tactile touch. When the paper dries during the making process, the edges are fluffy and uneven giving even more unique look.
