The question of how much wedding invitations cost is one of the most searched topics in wedding planning — and one of the least honestly answered. Most guides skim the surface, quote a narrow range and leave couples more confused than when they started. This guide does something different.
Wedding invitations cost anywhere from £150 to £15,000 and above. That is not an exaggeration. The reason the question is so difficult to answer clearly is that the word invitation covers an enormous spectrum. A digital template printed at home and a fully bespoke suite on handmade cotton paper with a custom venue illustration and hand calligraphy on every envelope are both technically wedding invitations. They share almost nothing else: not the materials, not the process, not the people who made them and not the experience your guests will have when they hold them for the first time.
This guide walks you through three clearly defined investment tiers, explains what drives the cost of wedding invitations at every level, introduces every design aesthetic available within our luxury semi-custom collections and helps you understand exactly where your wedding sits within the full range.
The Three Investment Tiers
What Wedding Invitations Cost and What You Get
Wedding invitation pricing divides naturally into three tiers. Each represents a fundamentally different approach to design, materials and craft. Understanding the difference between them is the most useful thing you can do before you speak to any designer or studio.
Tier One
Digital and Template Invitations — £150 to £400
This tier covers invitations designed from a pre-made template, printed digitally and ordered through an online platform or marketplace. You choose a design, personalise the wording, select a quantity and receive a printed suite by post. The paper is standard card stock, the printing is digital and the design was created for many thousands of couples, not for your wedding.
For 100 guests, a basic suite at this level costs between £150 and £300 for an invitation card, RSVP and envelopes. Adding details cards, belly bands or envelope liners brings the total to £350 to £400.
This is a legitimate choice for couples whose celebration is casual or budget-conscious. The limitation is straightforward: your invitations will look identical to every other couple who chose the same design. There is no illustration created for your venue, no paper chosen for your palette and no artisan involved in the making. Platforms such as Canva, Minted and Paperlust serve this tier well. They are not what we do at Babooche Calligraphy.
Tier Two
Luxury Semi-Custom Wedding Invitations — From £1,795
Here is where the conversation about luxury stationery begins in earnest. Before we go further, it is worth making a distinction that most cost guides never address. The phrase semi-custom covers two entirely different things in the wedding stationery world.
At large online retailers it means choosing from thousands of templates and paying per card, with digital print on standard stock. At a specialist luxury studio it means something categorically different: choosing from a curated collection of original designs created by a professional calligrapher and illustrator, personalising every element to your wedding, and receiving a suite made with the same artisan techniques and premium materials as a fully bespoke commission. At Babooche Calligraphy our nine signature collections use handmade and luxury cotton papers, artisan printing techniques including letterpress and hot foil stamping, and the same personal design service as our fully bespoke work. Your suite is ready in four to six weeks rather than the six to nine months of a full bespoke commission.
Each of our nine collections has a distinct character and is designed for a specific aesthetic and type of wedding. Here is what each one offers.
Amour — Romantic Parisian Floral Wedding Invitations
Amour was designed for the incurably romantic. Inspired by the florals of a Parisian flower market and the elegance of French typography, this collection suits couples planning weddings with a soft, romantic aesthetic: dreamy garden ceremonies, French chateau weddings, intimate candlelit receptions. If your mood board is full of blush tones, trailing florals and the effortless elegance that feels Parisian wherever it appears, Amour is your collection. Explore the Amour collection.
Bougainvillea — Mediterranean Botanical Wedding Invitations
Bougainvillea captures the heat and colour of the Mediterranean. Vibrant botanical illustrations, warm terracotta tones and the lush textures of an Italian or Greek summer make this the natural choice for couples planning destination weddings on the Amalfi Coast, in the Italian countryside or across the Greek islands. If your wedding palette runs to coral, amber and sun-bleached linen, Bougainvillea brings that landscape to paper. Explore the Bougainvillea collection.
Serene — Modern Minimalist Luxury Wedding Invitations
Serene is for the couple who understands that restraint is its own form of luxury. Soft minimalist elegance, delicate detailing and a contemporary aesthetic that does not shout but is impossible to overlook. This collection suits modern luxury venues, clean architectural spaces and couples whose aesthetic is defined more by what is left out than what is added. Explore the Serene collection.
Trésor — Vintage Jewel Tone Wedding Invitations
Trésor is unapologetically opulent. Rich jewel tones, ornate vintage-inspired detailing and a sense of old-world grandeur that suits historic venues, baroque interiors and weddings with a moody, romantic, maximalist aesthetic. Think deep burgundy, forest green, midnight navy and gold. Think candlelit ballrooms and the kind of wedding that feels like it belongs in another century. Explore the Trésor collection.
Chéri — Romantic French Wedding Invitations
Chéri carries the timeless charm of the French countryside. Soft, romantic and deeply elegant, this collection was designed for couples whose wedding aesthetic draws from the beauty of Provence, the Loire Valley or a French country estate in full summer bloom. If you are planning a French destination wedding and want your invitations to feel as though they belong to that landscape, Chéri was made for exactly that moment. Explore the Chéri collection.
La Botanique — Illustrated Botanical Wedding Invitations
La Botanique is a celebration of the natural world translated into fine art. Lush botanical illustrations, intricate leaf and flower details and a design philosophy rooted in the beauty of nature make this collection the first choice for couples who want their invitations to feel like a botanical print from a private collection. It suits garden ceremonies, greenhouse venues, conservatory receptions and any wedding where the planting is as important as everything else. Explore the La Botanique collection.
Secret Garden — English Garden Floral Wedding Invitations
Secret Garden captures the romance of an English summer garden at its most beautiful. Whimsical florals, soft pastel tones, the gentle chaos of a garden in full bloom. This collection suits English country house weddings, walled garden ceremonies and any couple whose wedding has that particular quality of a perfect English summer afternoon. Explore the Secret Garden collection.
Rêve — Venue Illustration Wedding Invitations
Rêve was designed for couples who want to put their venue at the heart of their invitations without commissioning a fully bespoke illustration. A dreamy architectural venue illustration forms the centrepiece of this collection, giving it an elegance and specificity that purely typographic designs cannot achieve. The natural choice for couples planning weddings at iconic venues who want their invitations to carry that sense of place from the moment they arrive. Explore the Rêve collection.
Le Printemps — Spring Floral Wedding Invitations
Le Printemps is light, fresh and full of the energy of early spring. Fresh floral botanicals in soft bloom, a light and airy aesthetic and the feeling of a morning with the windows open and flowers just coming into season. This collection suits spring and early summer weddings where the palette is soft, the mood is joyful and the overall aesthetic is one of natural beauty at its most uncomplicated. Explore the Le Printemps collection.

Tier Three
Fully Bespoke Fine Art Invitation Suites — From £3,500
A fully bespoke invitation suite is designed entirely from nothing, for your wedding and only your wedding. There is no template, no collection framework and nothing that existed before your commission began. The custom venue illustration that appears in your invitations will never appear in another couple’s suite. The paper selection, the ribbon colour, the wax seal motif, the calligraphy style, the die-cut shape, the printing technique combinations: everything emerges from your brief and your story alone.
Bespoke wedding invitations are the choice of couples planning extraordinary weddings at venues that demand something made specifically for them: a die-cut gatefold shaped to the iron gates of a French chateau, a hand-drawn venue illustration of a 16th century Italian villa on Lake Como, a suite of letterpress and hot foil stationery on bespoke handmade paper with a custom watermark. These are the commissions that define what luxury wedding stationery can be at its finest.
Our bespoke work has taken us to Château de Chantilly in France, Villa Pizzo and Villa Corsini in Italy, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como, Villa Catignano in Tuscany, Borgo di Tragliata in Rome and Kenwood House in London. We work primarily with American couples planning destination weddings across Europe who want invitations as exceptional as the venues they have chosen. We accept only 15 bespoke commissions each year to ensure every couple receives our complete creative attention from the first consultation to the moment their suite is shipped anywhere in the world.

What Determines the Cost of Wedding Invitations?
Behind every figure in the three tiers above are six specific decisions about materials, process and craft. Understanding these will help you evaluate any quote you receive and make better decisions about where to invest.
Blush handmade cotton paper with blind embossed botanical ornaments and soft letterpress calligraphy. The tactile quality that distinguishes luxury stationery begins with the paper.
Paper
Standard invitation card stock costs a fraction of handmade cotton paper from a specialist mill. Handmade cotton papers are made from cotton fibre rather than wood pulp. They have a weight, texture and longevity that machine-made card cannot replicate. They are typically produced in weights from 300gsm to over 700gsm and the natural deckled edges are a result of the handmaking process, not a decorative addition. Paper is the single most immediately noticeable difference when you hold a beautifully made invitation for the first time.
Printing Technique
Digital printing is clean, versatile and the most affordable method. Letterpress printing presses ink deep into thick cotton paper through a custom polymer or metal plate, leaving a tactile impression felt with the fingertips. Hot foil stamping heat-presses real metallic foil into the paper surface through a separately created die, producing a depth and luminosity that digital foil cannot match. Each additional technique requires its own setup, plate and press run, adding meaningfully to both the cost and the visual complexity of the result.
Design
A template requires minimal design time. A custom venue illustration of a French chateau or an Italian villa on Lake Como requires 15 to 30 hours of skilled drawing before a single print plate is made. A fully bespoke commission encompasses multiple rounds of concept development, illustration refinement and typographic design. That creative investment is reflected in the investment figure.
Hand Finishing
Wax seals pressed individually by hand, ribbon tied around each suite one at a time, envelope liners painted by brush rather than printed by machine, calligraphy written on every envelope in a personal hand. Across 100 or 150 guest suites this represents days of skilled artisan work. It is irreplaceable and it is reflected accurately in what it costs.
Guest Count
Letterpress printing and die-cutting involve fixed setup costs spread across the print run. The more suites you order, the lower the cost per suite. This is worth bearing in mind if you are close to a quantity threshold when planning your guest list.
Suite Complexity
A single invitation card costs less than a complete suite of seven or eight pieces. Every component requires its own design, print run and assembly time. The more pieces in your suite, the higher the total investment.
The Hidden Costs Most Guides Never Mention
Every cost guide focuses on the printed cards. Very few mention what regularly catches couples off guard. Budget for these from the start and you will not be surprised later.
Envelope Addressing
At our Couture Suite and Complete Bespoke levels and above, hand calligraphy addressing is included in the commission. At other levels, addressing for 100 to 150 envelopes commissioned separately typically costs between £150 and £400 depending on quantity and style. Always confirm this when requesting a quote.
Postage
A multi-piece luxury suite on handmade cotton paper with a wax seal and ribbon weighs considerably more than a standard letter. For destination weddings with guests based in the United States, Canada or Australia, international postage for a heavy suite adds meaningfully to the total. Your studio should advise on this at the quoting stage. We include this guidance in every commission.
Day of Stationery
Menus, place cards, ceremony programmes, table plans and welcome cards carry your design through the entire celebration. At bespoke level, coordinating all of these to your invitation suite is part of the service but represents a separate investment from the invitation commission itself. Explore our on the day wedding stationery options here.
Save the Dates
For destination weddings where guests are travelling internationally, a coordinating save the date that establishes your aesthetic early is not an indulgence. It is a practical necessity and the first opportunity to set the tone of your wedding from the very first communication your guests receive.
Is It Worth Investing in Luxury Wedding Invitations?
Every couple we have worked with has kept their invitations. Not eventually filed them, not recycled them: kept them, in many cases framed them. The same is rarely true of most other elements of wedding expenditure.
Your wedding invitations are the only piece of your wedding that every guest takes home before the day even begins. They sit on mantelpieces and in frames for months in advance and for years afterwards. They exist beyond the celebration in a physical, tangible form that photographs and video cannot replicate. When someone holds a beautifully made invitation on handmade cotton paper with a letterpress impression and a wax seal for the first time, they understand immediately what kind of wedding they have been invited to.
If your answer to the question of what your wedding should feel like is that nothing about it should be ordinary, then your invitations should not be ordinary either.
How to Choose the Right Tier for Your Wedding
Three questions to ask yourself before you approach any designer or studio.
What percentage of your overall wedding budget are you prepared to invest in stationery?
The widely used industry benchmark is two to five per cent of the total wedding budget allocated to stationery. For couples planning truly luxury celebrations at exceptional European venues the figure is often significantly higher. A complete bespoke stationery suite including save the dates, invitations, day of pieces and hand calligraphy addressing can represent an investment of £15,000 and above, and for many of our clients that feels entirely appropriate for the wedding they are planning. If stationery matters to you, invest accordingly.
Does your venue and celebration deserve something genuinely extraordinary?
If you have spent months planning a wedding at a venue that is architecturally or historically remarkable, and invited guests who are travelling internationally to be there, your invitations should carry that same intention. A venue illustration on handmade paper with letterpress and foil is not an extravagance when your venue is a 17th century French chateau or a 16th century Italian villa on Lake Como. It is the appropriate creative response to an exceptional place.
How important is exclusivity to you?
If you want a suite that cannot be found in any collection, cannot be replicated by any other couple and was designed entirely from your story, bespoke is the only route. If a beautifully crafted collection design made with artisan printing, premium paper and luxury embellishments feels right for your wedding, our semi-custom suites deliver exactly that experience in a fraction of the timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do wedding invitations cost on average?
How much wedding invitations cost varies enormously depending on the tier, the techniques and the studio. At the digital template end the average is £150 to £400 for a full suite. At the luxury semi-custom level, such as our Signature Suite at Babooche Calligraphy, the average investment is £2,795. For a fully bespoke destination wedding suite the average investment is between £5,500 and £15,000 and above.
How much should I budget for wedding invitations?
The widely used industry benchmark is two to five per cent of your total wedding budget allocated to stationery. For a luxury destination wedding at a European venue many couples invest between £5,000 and £15,000 and above for a complete suite including save the dates, invitations and day of stationery. The right figure depends on your priorities, your guest count and how much of your story you want your stationery to tell.
What is the difference between semi-custom and bespoke wedding invitations?
Semi-custom wedding invitations are personalised from a professionally designed collection. The design framework already exists and is ready to tailor to your wedding through paper choice, printing technique, colour palette, wording and embellishments. Bespoke wedding invitations are designed entirely from scratch, exclusively for your wedding. No element exists before your commission begins and no element will ever be used for another couple. At Babooche Calligraphy luxury semi-custom suites start from £1,795 and fully bespoke commissions start from £3,500.
Why are luxury wedding invitations so expensive?
The cost reflects the materials and the craft. Handmade cotton paper from specialist mills, letterpress printing on custom-made plates, hot foil stamping through individually created dies, hand calligraphy written on every envelope and wax seals pressed one at a time are not quick or inexpensive processes. The tactile quality cannot be replicated digitally and it does not come from a template. When you hold a beautifully made invitation for the first time you understand immediately what you are paying for.
How much do destination wedding invitations cost?
Destination wedding invitations typically represent a higher investment than domestic ones because they carry more information and serve more purpose. A full luxury bespoke destination wedding suite including save the date, invitation, hand-drawn venue map, details card, RSVP and day of stationery typically represents an investment of between £3,500 and £15,000 and above depending on guest count and complexity. Our Complete Bespoke commission, the most popular tier for destination weddings at European venues, starts from £5,500.
How much do letterpress wedding invitations cost?
Letterpress printing is available across all three of our semi-custom packages from £1,795 and is included in all bespoke commissions from £3,500. It requires a custom polymer or metal plate for each design element, a specialist press and skilled operation. The result is a deep tactile impression in the paper that no other printing method replicates and that guests consistently notice and comment on.
How much do botanical wedding invitations cost?
Botanical wedding invitations cost anywhere from £150 for a digital template to £5,500 and above for a fully bespoke illustrated suite with custom fine art botanical drawings. At Babooche Calligraphy our La Botanique and Bougainvillea semi-custom collections offer lush botanical illustrations on premium handmade and cotton papers from £1,795. For a fully bespoke botanical suite with an original illustration created exclusively for your wedding our bespoke commissions start from £3,500.
How much do French chateau wedding invitations cost?
French chateau wedding invitations cost from £1,795 at semi-custom level up to £15,000 and above for a fully bespoke commission. At the luxury bespoke level a complete suite with a custom venue illustration, letterpress and foil printing, handmade paper and hand calligraphy addressing starts from £5,500. At semi-custom level our Amour and Chéri collections capture the romantic Parisian and French country aesthetic from £1,795.
When should I order my wedding invitations?
For fully bespoke commissions begin the process six to nine months before your wedding date. For luxury semi-custom suites at Babooche Calligraphy production takes four to six weeks from final design approval. For destination weddings invitations should be sent twelve to sixteen weeks before the wedding day. This means beginning a semi-custom commission at least five months before the wedding and a bespoke commission at least nine to twelve months in advance.
