A bespoke Lake Como wedding invitation suite for Jennifer and Stanislav’s destination wedding at Villa Pizzo, featuring a hand drawn venue map, hand painted dress code illustration and a die cut Villa Pizzo RSVP card.

When Jennifer and Stanislav decided to commission bespoke Lake Como wedding invitations for their Italian destination wedding, they did something remarkably brave. They had booked Villa Pizzo and the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, two of the most coveted venues on Lake Como, sight unseen. They had never set foot on the lake. They had never walked the gardens at Villa Pizzo or watched the light shift across the water at golden hour. They were trusting an aesthetic, an inspiration, and the belief that the most romantic destination wedding location in the world would not let them down.

When that level of trust is placed in a destination, the wedding stationery has to do something extraordinary. It has to bring the lake to the bride’s family in Texas. It has to make the welcome party at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo feel as real as the wedding day itself. It has to translate the wisteria that drapes across Lake Como, the pale terracotta of an Italian afternoon, and the centuries of history pressed into the walls of a 16th century villa into something that arrives in a guest’s hands and makes them gasp.

This is the story of a bespoke Lake Como wedding invitation suite designed for an American couple, anchored on a custom die cut gatefold inspired by the actual gates of Villa Pizzo, opening to reveal a hand calligraphed Roy Croft love poem inside.

The Story

An American Couple, an Italian Dream, Sight Unseen

How Jennifer and Stanislav came to be married at Villa Pizzo

Stanislav proposed to Jennifer on a trip to San Miguel de Allende in 2022. Within weeks of saying yes, Jennifer had booked their first wedding vendor, photographer Jessica Mangia, drawn to her ability to capture timeless, artistic imagery with an old world editorial aesthetic. Italy was originally just an inspiration, a colour palette, a feeling. But after viewing the portfolio of Milan based planner Gionata Russo, the couple made a decision that defines a particular kind of bride. They committed to the land of la dolce vita without needing to see it first.

Lake Como proved the most logistically considered choice. Just over an hour from Milan Malpensa airport, with centuries of romantic credentials and a natural concentration of the most beautiful villas in Europe, it has become the unofficial capital of luxury American destination weddings. They booked Villa Pizzo for the wedding day and the legendary Grand Hotel Tremezzo for the welcome party, sight unseen, on the strength of photographs alone.

When the brief reached our studio, the challenge was clear. We had to create Lake Como wedding invitations that did not just announce a date and a venue, but transported every guest, particularly those flying from the United States, into the world of the celebration before they had even booked their flight.

The Venue

Villa Pizzo, the Crown Jewel of Lake Como

A 16th century villa, the longest waterfront on the lake

Villa Pizzo is one of the oldest residences on Lake Como. Built in the 16th century by the noble Muggiasca family as a refuge from the plague that ravaged Europe, the villa has spent six centuries being shaped, layered, and refined into the romantic stage it is today. Its blush pink facade, hand painted frescoed ceilings, mosaic floors, and the longest private waterfront of any villa on the lake have made it one of the most coveted Italian wedding venues in the world. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Stevie Wonder and Kanye West have all chosen its grounds for their celebrations.

For an American couple planning a luxury European destination wedding, Villa Pizzo offers something almost no other venue can. It is genuinely intimate, despite being able to host larger celebrations. The Italian Garden with its Japanese camphor tree (the tree of life), the formal Court overlooking the lake, the antique terraces, and the iconic ornate iron gates at the entrance combine to feel less like a venue booking and more like marrying into a private estate. It is the kind of place that earns the description “old world Italian elegance” without ever needing to try.

The Destination

Why Lake Como is the Ultimate American Destination Wedding Location

Geography, history and la dolce vita in equal measure

There are very few places in the world that combine the cinematic romance, the genuine accessibility, and the layered history of Lake Como. Just over an hour from Milan Malpensa airport, the lake has long been a quiet retreat for European nobility and contemporary cultural figures alike. For American couples planning a luxury European destination wedding, it offers a rare combination. Direct flights from major US cities into Milan, world class hotels with English speaking concierge teams, a concentration of the most architecturally significant villas in Europe, and a microclimate that holds wisteria, hydrangea, and old garden roses well into the autumn.

The lake itself is the constant. Glassy, mountain framed, never quite the same colour twice. Its presence threads through every part of a Lake Como wedding, from the boat arrivals at private docks to the way light shifts across the water at golden hour. For couples like Jennifer and Stanislav who chose their venues sight unseen, the lake is what they were really booking. The villas are simply the spaces that let it speak.

It is no coincidence that some of the most photographed celebrity weddings of the last two decades have happened here. Lake Como is where European tradition and American romance meet, and where bespoke wedding stationery has the rare opportunity to honour both.

The Design

The Brief and the Palette

Translating wisteria, lake water and an Italian afternoon into paper

When Jennifer first reached out, the palette was already crystallising in her mind. She shared her floral inspiration, an old world arrangement of lilac garden roses, powder blue delphinium, blush ranunculus, and soft trailing greenery, the kind of bouquet that could have been pulled from a Renaissance still life. She also told us about the soft lilac dress she had chosen for her pre-wedding photo shoot on the lake, a dress that looked like it had stepped out of a fresco. Between those two reference points, the suite palette wrote itself.

We chose three handmade cotton papers as the foundation. Blush, the warm pink that echoed both the Villa Pizzo facade and Jennifer’s lilac pre-wedding shoot dress against the cream Italian backdrop. Powder blue, the colour the lake takes on when the morning light hits it. And light powder green, the soft sage of Lake Como’s gardens at the very end of summer. Each paper was deckle edged, hand torn rather than guillotined, so the moment a guest opened the envelope they would feel the irregular softness of paper made the way it was made centuries ago.

The print decisions followed the same principle. Blush pink letterpress ink for the names on the main invitation, soft enough to feel like watercolour but pressed deep enough into the paper to leave a tactile impression. Gold foil for the smallest, most precious moments, the central scrollwork on the gatefold, the names on the vow folios, the calligraphy at the top of the bespoke Lake Como map. Blind embossing throughout, so the botanical corner ornaments on the invitation, the floral envelope flap and the deckled detailing all caught the light without needing colour. Hand calligraphy on every place card, every envelope, every line of the Roy Croft quote inside the gatefold, written in soft blue ink that settled gently into the cotton paper.

The brief, in the end, was deceptively simple. Translate the wisteria, the lake, and the warm Italian afternoon into a set of Lake Como wedding invitations that Jennifer’s family in Texas could hold in their hands and understand exactly where this wedding was about to take them.

The Heart of the Suite

The Custom Die Cut Villa Pizzo Gatefold

Hand drawn from the actual ornate iron gates of Villa Pizzo

When you commission bespoke Lake Como wedding invitations, there is one detail that arrives at every guest’s home before the lake or the villa or the wisteria does. The first thing they will hold in their hands. The piece that has to do the work of welcoming them into the world of the wedding before they have even read the date.

For Jennifer and Stanislav, that piece was a custom die cut gatefold designed from the actual ornate iron gates that mark the entrance to Villa Pizzo. We sourced reference images of the gates online, then took a separate photograph of the gates ourselves to draw from, and hand illustrated the architectural detail line by line. The finished gatefold was die cut to the exact silhouette of the gate finials at the top, printed in soft powder blue on handmade cotton paper, with the central scrollwork picked out in delicate gold foil. It wraps around the entire suite, holding the invitation, the bespoke Lake Como map, the powder green details card, the hand painted dress code card, and the die cut RSVP all together as one editorial object.

A blush wax seal stamped with the couple’s J and S monogram holds the gates closed. The seal sits across the meeting point of the two gates, fixed to one side and lifting away with the other so the recipient does not have to break it. A small mercy, because that wax seal becomes a keepsake in itself, the kind a bride saves in a glass box on a shelf for years afterwards.

When the gates open, the most quietly emotional moment of the entire suite is revealed. A line of poetry by Roy Croft, hand calligraphed in soft blue ink directly onto powder blue handmade cotton paper. “I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me.” It is the only piece of the suite that does not announce, instruct, or guide. It simply holds a feeling, and trusts the reader to bring everything else.

The Invitation

The Main Invitation

Blush handmade cotton paper, soft blush pink letterpress, blind embossed botanicals

Beneath the gates, the main invitation is the heart that holds everything together. Printed on the blush handmade cotton paper that runs through the suite, with deckled edges hand torn rather than guillotined, the card has a softness in the hand that no machine made paper can replicate. It is the kind of paper that feels expensive before a single word has been read.

The wording on these Lake Como wedding invitations is traditional and formal, written in the way Jennifer’s family in Texas would expect to read it. Mr Laurence Bergman, Mrs Judy Barron, Mr Yury and Mrs Rita Goluschik request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their children, Jennifer Bergman and Stanislav Golubchik, Wednesday, the twentieth of September two thousand and twenty three, at five o’clock in the evening. Villa Pizzo, Lake Como, Italy. Reception to follow.

The print methods carry the design language across every line. The names of the bride and groom are letterpress printed in soft blush pink ink, the calligraphy hand drawn first and then translated into a pressed plate, so the impression sits deep into the paper and catches the light when held at an angle. The botanical corner ornaments are blind embossed, no ink at all, only pressure and shadow. They were drawn from the climbing wisteria and old garden roses that bloom across Lake Como in late summer, and they appear again, more abstractly, on the gold embossed flap of the powder green outer envelope.

The Map

A Hand Drawn Lake Como Map

The whole weekend, told in one card

A destination wedding lives or dies on whether the guests understand where they are going. Not just the date and the dress code, but the geography. Where the welcome party is in relation to the wedding day. How far one venue sits from the next. What the lake actually looks like. For an American guest flying into Milan for the first time, that geographic confusion is usually solved with a printed itinerary and a Google map link. We wanted to do something kinder.

We hand drew an illustrated map of Lake Como specifically for Jennifer and Stanislav’s wedding, marking out the three venues that would shape their guests’ weekend. Grand Hotel Tremezzo at the top, where the welcome party would happen the night before the wedding. Villa Pizzo in the middle, where the ceremony and reception would take place. Villa d’Este at the bottom, where the couple’s pre-wedding boat photographs would be captured against the iconic gates and where many of their guests would stay. Around the venues we drew the lake itself in soft fine line work, added two small sailing boats, and a compass rose for orientation. The card was printed on the same blush handmade cotton paper as the main invitation, with the words “Lake Como” hand calligraphed at the top and printed in gold foil, and finished with a champagne silk tassel threaded through a gold grommet at the corner. The whole card has the quiet feel of a souvenir before the celebration has even begun.

The RSVP

A Die Cut Villa Pizzo RSVP

A reply card shaped like the villa itself

Most RSVP cards are rectangular. Ours rarely are. For Jennifer and Stanislav we wanted the reply card to be its own moment of recognition, the second image a guest would carry of Villa Pizzo before they ever set foot on the lake. So we die cut the RSVP to the exact silhouette of the villa itself, the long horizontal facade with its tiered finials at the roofline, the central archway, the ground level windows.

The illustration of the villa was hand drawn in fine line work, printed in a softer powder blue against the powder blue handmade cotton paper, so the building reads as a quiet ghost rather than a literal photograph. The word RSVP was hand calligraphed and printed in gold foil at the bottom corner. A lavender silk ribbon was hand tied through a small punched hole at the top right, the same lavender that ran through the bridesmaids’ palette and Jennifer’s pre-wedding shoot dress. When a guest tipped the gatefold to slide the inserts out, the RSVP would peek through first, a small architectural surprise.

The Details

The Details Card

All the information guests needed, beautifully presented

For a destination wedding, the Details card carries more weight than any other insert in the suite. It is the piece that answers every practical question the guest is going to have once they have accepted the invitation, and it is the piece that has to communicate clearly without crowding the main invitation with logistical text. We have always believed that Lake Como wedding invitations work best when the formal invitation card itself is allowed to be quiet and traditional, and a separate Details card carries the weekend’s complexity.

For Jennifer and Stanislav, the Details card was printed on powder green handmade cotton paper with deckled edges, the same paper as the outer envelope so the suite read as one cohesive object. The headings were hand calligraphed in soft script and printed in gold foil. The body text, set beneath each heading, walked guests through the welcome party at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo on the evening of September nineteenth, the wedding ceremony and reception at Villa Pizzo on September twentieth, the boat pickup arrangements from select locations in Como and Cernobbio, and a redirect to the wedding website for travel and accommodation guidance. Everything a guest needed, on a single card, in a colour that matched the lake at dawn.

A Favourite Detail

The Hand Painted Dress Code Card

An original watercolour for every guest

If we had to choose one detail in this entire suite as our favourite, it would be the Dress Code card. It is not the most expensive piece to produce, it is not the most architecturally complex, and it is not the moment of greatest reveal. But it is the piece that takes the most genuine artistry to make well, and it is the piece that brides remember years after the wedding day.

Most destination weddings require guests to dress for two or three different events across the weekend. The welcome party tends to be a softer, more playful affair. The wedding day is formal. Sometimes there is a brunch the morning after with a different dress code again. For a guest flying internationally with limited luggage, the question of what to actually wear is real and unromantic. We wanted to answer it without writing the word “cocktail” or “black tie” in dry text.

So we hand painted them. Every figure on the Dress Code card was drawn from scratch and then watercolour painted in the studio, before being digitally printed onto the blush handmade cotton paper that runs through the rest of the suite. The top half shows two figures in white cocktail attire for the welcome party at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, a flowing white dress for her and a relaxed white shirt and chinos for him. The bottom half shows the wedding day, a black tie tuxedo for him and a soft pink couture gown for her. Each figure was painted with a softness and intentional imperfection that made them feel illustrated rather than diagrammatic, and the colours used to paint the gowns were drawn directly from the wedding palette so the card sat naturally alongside everything else. It is the kind of detail that would have been a watercolour board on Pinterest at most weddings. For Jennifer and Stanislav, it became something they could hand to their families.

The Envelope

The Outer Envelope

Gold embossed botanical flap, hand calligraphed addressing

The envelope is the first thing a guest will ever see of a wedding invitation suite. Before the gatefold opens, before the wax seal is admired, before the dress code card surprises them, there is the moment the envelope arrives in their mailbox or is handed to them at a hotel concierge desk. For a destination wedding suite this opening moment matters more than usual, because the envelope itself is the first piece of editorial that will travel internationally and survive the journey.

For Jennifer and Stanislav’s suite, we made the outer envelope from the same powder green handmade cotton paper as the Details card, so the suite read as a single object from the moment the flap was opened. The flap itself was finished with a gold embossed botanical motif of trailing wisteria and old garden roses, the same floral language that appeared blind embossed on the corners of the main invitation. The addressing was hand calligraphed in champagne ink directly onto the front of the envelope, every guest’s name written by hand. When a guest lifted the flap, they revealed the custom die cut Villa Pizzo gates gatefold sealed shut with the J and S wax seal, and the powder blue die cut RSVP card peeking out from beneath. The envelope was the prologue. Everything inside was the story.

The Three Venues

Three Iconic Lake Como Venues

Three iconic venues woven into one Lake Como wedding weekend

One of the quiet luxuries of a Lake Como wedding is that no single venue has to do all the work. The lake itself acts as a connecting thread between several of the most architecturally significant villas in Europe, and the most considered American couples build their weekend across two or three of them. Jennifer and Stanislav’s suite featured three venues, hand drawn together onto the bespoke Lake Como map, each one carrying a different role in the celebration.

Villa Pizzo in Cernobbio was the wedding venue itself, the 16th century villa with the longest waterfront on the lake, the hand painted frescoed ceilings, and the iconic ornate iron gates that became the design centrepiece of the entire suite. It is the venue that gave the suite its architecture.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo further up the lake hosted the welcome party on the evening before the wedding. A grand belle epoque hotel known for its terraces, its classical Italian gardens, and its uninterrupted views across the water to Bellagio, Tremezzo offered the softer, more theatrical opening to the weekend. White cocktail attire, golden light, and the slow building anticipation of the wedding day to follow.

Villa d’Este in the village of Cernobbio is one of the most photographed properties on the lake, its 152 rooms a familiar choice for American couples and their wedding parties looking for accommodation close to Villa Pizzo. Jennifer and Stanislav captured their pre-wedding photographs in a Riva boat outside Villa d’Este in the soft Italian morning light. Three venues, one lake, one weekend, all hand drawn into a single souvenir.

The Wedding Day

Day of Stationery

From invitation to ceremony, a single visual language

A bespoke wedding stationery suite is only ever half the story. The invitation suite arrives at a guest’s home weeks before the wedding, sets the tone, and then has to live up to itself on the day. For Jennifer and Stanislav, the day of stationery was designed to extend the suite’s visual language across every place setting, every moment of the ceremony, and every detail of the reception. Same handmade cotton papers. Same blind debossed florals. Same hand calligraphy. So that when a guest sat down at the king’s table inside the glass greenhouse, they recognised something. The paper they were holding was speaking the same language as the gatefold that arrived at their door three months earlier.

The Menu

The wedding menu was the most labour intensive piece of day of stationery in the suite. Each menu was letterpress printed for the body text, gold foil printed for the headings, and finished with blind debossed floral motifs that echoed the corner ornaments on the main invitation. Three different print processes, all on a single card, all on the same handmade cotton paper as the invitation. The result was a menu that worked as a keepsake. Many guests took theirs home.

The Place Cards

Every place card was die cut from lilac handmade cotton paper with the same blind debossed floral language carried across the suite, then hand calligraphed in white ink for every guest. The white ink calligraphy was a deliberate choice. It softens against the lilac paper without competing with the gold flatware and the lavender florals on the king’s table, and it gives the place card a quiet luminance under the candlelight. Each card was written by hand in the studio in the weeks before the wedding, then carefully packed for the journey to Lake Como.

The Lace Ceremony Fans

For an al fresco September ceremony on a Lake Como terrace, comfort matters as much as beauty. We sourced and styled lace fabric ceremony fans for every guest, hand placed on the small concrete stools at each seat before the ceremony began. The fans offered shade and softness in the warm Italian afternoon, but they also became one of the most photographed accessories of the day, picked up and carried throughout the reception, eventually pressed into the pages of programmes and folded into welcome bags as keepsakes. They were a quiet reminder that bespoke wedding stationery does not stop at paper.

The Vow Folios

His and Hers Vow Folios

Linen, silk and Japanese stab binding

There is a particular kind of bride who, having commissioned a bespoke wedding stationery suite of this depth, would never deliver her vows from a folded sheet of paper or a phone screen. Jennifer was that bride. Stanislav was that groom. We made them his and hers vow folios to match.

Each folio was hand bound from a soft linen cover in a pale neutral that complemented the suite without competing with the wedding day flowers. The spines were finished with Japanese stab binding, an old technique using silk ribbon stitched through the spine in a series of decorative knots, both functional and beautiful. The names “Jennifer” and “Stanislav” were hand calligraphed and printed in gold foil onto the front of each folio. Inside, the couple’s vows, written by hand, on the same handmade cotton paper that ran through the rest of the suite. After the ceremony, the folios were not discarded. They are heirloom keepsakes now, kept in a glass box on a shelf in the couple’s home, to be opened on anniversaries and remembered on every one that follows.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Lake Como Wedding Invitations

How much do luxury Lake Como wedding invitations cost?

Bespoke wedding stationery commissions begin from £3,500, with the final investment depending on the complexity of the design, the print processes required, and the level of hand finishing involved. Suites featuring custom die cutting, hand painting, gold foil, multiple handmade cotton papers and bespoke venue illustrations sit at a higher investment level. You can read our full guide to wedding invitation costs for more detail.

When should I send Lake Como wedding invitations?

For a Lake Como destination wedding, save the dates should be sent eight to twelve months in advance to allow international guests time to book flights and accommodation. The full wedding invitation suite should be sent twelve to sixteen weeks before the wedding day, with RSVPs requested six to eight weeks before the event. For weddings in peak summer season (June through September), longer lead times are recommended due to higher accommodation demand around the lake.

What should a Lake Como wedding invitation suite include?

A complete Lake Como wedding invitation suite typically includes the formal invitation card, an RSVP card, a Details card covering accommodation and transportation, an outer envelope with hand calligraphed addressing, and a bespoke venue illustration or hand drawn lake map. Many luxury suites also include a Dress Code card to guide guests across multiple events, a wax seal with the couple’s monogram, and silk ribbons or tassels as embellishments. For multi day celebrations across two or three Lake Como venues, a venue map card is particularly valuable for orienting international guests.

Do you ship Lake Como wedding invitations to the United States?

Yes, we regularly ship bespoke wedding invitation suites to American couples and their international guest lists. Suites are carefully packed and shipped via tracked courier to anywhere in the United States, typically arriving within five to seven working days. Many of our American clients ask us to send the full suite to a single address, then post the individual invitations from within the United States to streamline mailing logistics for their guests. We are happy to advise on the most appropriate shipping arrangements during the design process.

How long does it take to design a bespoke Lake Como wedding invitation suite?

A fully bespoke Lake Como wedding invitation suite typically takes between three and five months from initial enquiry to delivery. The design phase usually takes six to eight weeks and includes discovery, concept presentation, three rounds of revisions, and final approval. Production then takes a further six to ten weeks depending on the print processes involved. Letterpress, gold foil, and die cutting each require dedicated tooling and turnaround time. We recommend beginning the conversation around eight to nine months before the wedding day to allow comfortable lead time and avoid rush fees.

The Day Itself

Where Paper Meets the Lake

From the moment the gates of Villa Pizzo were drawn onto powder blue paper, to the moment the gates of Villa Pizzo opened on a September afternoon and Jennifer walked through them as a bride, every detail of this celebration was held together by a single thread. The wisteria. The lake. The warm Italian afternoon light. The soft blush of a fresco. A suite of paper that had travelled across continents, to a Texas mailbox, and into the hands of guests who flew across an ocean to be there.

This is what bespoke Lake Como wedding invitations can do. Not just announce a wedding. Carry it.
