Babooche Calligraphy designed and produced the bespoke Villa Pizzo wedding stationery for Jennifer and Stanislav’s destination wedding on Lake Como in Italy, on 20 September 2023, for fifty guests. The suite was built around a die cut gatefold drawn by hand from the ornamental iron gates at the entrance to the villa, printed on handmade cotton paper in blush, powder blue, powder green and sage with letterpress, blind embossing and gold foil.

Where It Began

The Brief

Jennifer and Stanislav commissioned us a year before the wedding, and the brief did not arrive as a list of items. We were in the planning calls from the start, on Zoom with the couple in the United States, their fine art photographer in the United States and their planner in Italy, working out the shape of the weekend together before anything was drawn.

That is the part couples rarely expect. Stationery is usually treated as a task to be completed once the venue is booked, and the stationer is the last supplier in the room. Here we were one of the first, developing the suite alongside the florals, the styling and the entertainment, which is why it reads as part of the wedding rather than an announcement of it.

We settled the palette from the flowers rather than from a swatch book. Blush, powder blue, lilac and sage, the same colours that would later appear in the bouquets, the ceremony aisle, the tablescape and the gowns the bridesmaids wore.

On The Western Shore Of Lake Como

Villa Pizzo As A Wedding Venue

Villa Pizzo stands at Cernobbio on the western shore of Lake Como, a sixteenth century estate with terraced gardens climbing the hillside, a glasshouse on the water and a blush pink facade facing Bellagio across the lake. Guests arrive either by road through the gardens or by boat at the private dock.

For stationery the villa gives us two very different registers to work with. Outside there are clipped topiary, stone staircases, statuary and a soft chalky pink. Inside there is a black and white checkerboard marble floor, green marble skirting and rococo plasterwork. Design that suits it has to sit between the garden and the salon rather than commit to either, so we kept the papers soft and the ornament fine.

The ornamental iron gates at the entrance are the detail every photographer records and no stationery uses. We made them the shape of the invitation, and drew the villa itself as a venue illustration for the reply card.

The Part That Mattered Most

Printing And Materials

Handmade Cotton Paper

We made the suite on handmade cotton paper, formed sheet by sheet rather than cut from a roll. No two sheets are identical, the edges are deckled rather than trimmed, and the surface carries a soft irregular texture that smooth card cannot imitate.

It is the right paper for a garden wedding on an Italian lake and the wrong paper for fine ornament, because soft fibre spreads detail. We drew everything printed on it with that in mind.

Letterpress, Blind And Ink

We letterpress printed the invitation twice. Once in ink for the wording, and once blind, with no ink at all, so the ornament is pressed into the sheet and read by light and shadow instead of colour.

Handmade paper takes a deep impression well, which is why the blind work reads across the whole sheet rather than only where the light falls.

Gold Foil

Foil is applied with heat and a metal die, pressing a fine layer of metal into the sheet rather than printing gold on top of it. The result is genuinely metallic, and it catches the light as the piece is turned.

We used it for the scrollwork on the gates, the heading on the map card, the headings on the details card and the floral pattern printed inside the envelope liner.

Die Cutting

Two pieces are die cut with custom steel rule dies. The gatefold, cut to the shape of the villa gates so the invitation opens as two shaped panels rather than a straight fold, and the reply card, cut to the silhouette of the villa itself.

Each die was made for this wedding alone. We develop the drawing and the cutting line together, because a shape that reads well on screen can fall apart once it has to survive being handled.

Hand Illustration

We drew three subjects by hand for this suite. The gates at the entrance, the villa itself for the reply card, and the three venues of the wedding weekend for the map.

Nothing was traced from a stock image. Drawing a building rather than photographing it means we can tune the line weight to the printing method it will be reproduced by.

Hand Painting And Finishing

We hand painted the dress code card rather than setting it as type, so guests could see the clothing for each event instead of reading a phrase they have to interpret.

We finish by hand as well. Eyelets punched and set, silk tassels threaded, wax seals poured and stamped, envelopes addressed in calligraphy. It is the slowest part of the work and the part guests notice first.

Drawn From The Villa Entrance

The Die Cut Gates

The invitation opens through a pair of die cut gates. We drew them by hand from the ornamental ironwork at the entrance to Villa Pizzo, the same way we work on any venue illustration, printed them in powder blue with gold foil scrollwork, and closed them with a monogrammed wax seal.

Inside, rather than the invitation wording, we hand calligraphed a poem the couple had chosen, in soft blue ink across the spread. The wording waits on the card behind it.

The sequence is the whole idea. Closed, the invitation gives nothing away. Opening the gates is the same gesture as arriving at the villa, and what is behind them is the reason for the day rather than the details of it.

Three Venues, One Lake

The Illustrated Map

The weekend moved between three places on the lake. Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa Pizzo and Villa d’Este. We drew each one by hand onto a map card so guests could see where they were going and how the water connected it.

For a destination wedding this is not decoration. Guests travelling from abroad arrive with no sense of how the places sit in relation to each other, and on Lake Como the distances are short but the roads are slow. A drawn map answers that faster than a list of addresses.

We printed it on handmade paper with a gold foil header, and finished it with a hand set eyelet and a gold tassel.

Two Dress Codes, Three Venues

Designing For A Wedding Weekend

A wedding spread across a weekend has to carry more information than a single day, without the suite turning into a folder of paperwork. We split it, and gave each piece one job.

The invitation holds the ceremony and the dinner. The details card in powder green carries the timings and the practical information, headed in gold foil. The dress code card handles what guests should wear to each event, and we painted it rather than describing it, since white cocktail attire and black tie mean different things in different countries. The reply card is die cut to the shape of the villa, so even the piece that gets posted back is a keepsake.

Carried Through To The Tables

The Day Of Stationery

We carried the same papers and processes onto the wedding day itself. Menus letterpress printed with gold foil headings and blind debossed florals, place cards die cut and written by hand in white ink on lilac, lace fans on every stone stool for an outdoor ceremony in September heat, and a pair of vow folios bound in linen with silk ribbon.

Because we had taken the palette from the florals a year earlier, the menus sitting on the chargers matched the lilac and blue running down the centre of the table without anything needing to be matched at the last minute. That is the advantage of designing the stationery alongside the wedding rather than after it.

20 September 2023

The Wedding

The ceremony was held on the terrace at Villa Pizzo beneath a floral arch, with the lake and the mountains behind it and an aisle lined in blue hydrangea, lilac roses and delphinium. Dinner followed at the villa, and the evening ran on with performers dressed to match the gardens and the palette of the day.

For Couples Planning Their Own

Commissioning Villa Pizzo Wedding Stationery

How far in advance should stationery for a Lake Como wedding be commissioned?

Around ten to twelve months before the wedding. This suite was commissioned a year ahead. Custom dies, hand drawn illustration and several print processes each need time, and invitations for a destination wedding are usually posted eight to twelve weeks ahead so guests can book flights and rooms.

What stationery does a Villa Pizzo wedding need?

An invitation suite, and then day of pieces that suit an outdoor ceremony and a dinner at the villa. Menus, place cards and fans for the terrace. Because guests move between hotels on the lake, a map card and a details card do more work here than they would at a single site wedding.

Do you work with planners and photographers on the wider design?

Yes, and the work is better for it. This suite was developed over calls with the couple, their planner in Italy and their photographer, so the papers and colours answer the florals, the styling and the venue rather than being chosen alone.

Can the venue illustration be used across the wedding?

Yes, and it usually should. A drawn venue can carry onto menus, place cards, signage and welcome gifts so the design runs through the whole weekend. See on the day stationery and venue illustrations.
